Walking into Birner means walking into more than just a tavern by the water. Long before the first Schnitzel was served here, the Birner family lived and worked as river millers on the Danube — until the great Danube regulation of 1870 to 1875 made their trade vanish almost overnight. Out of that hardship came something new: a tavern, pleasure boat trips, and a ferry crossing whose name still lives on today in the Birnersteg footbridge. Since 1917, the tavern has stood in its current form on the Obere Alte Donau, its walls having witnessed more than a century of history. Today it serves Viennese tavern cuisine the way it should be: honest, generous, and looking out over the very water that gave the family its first trade.
